Dear Center Colleagues and Friends,
On behalf of our faculty, students and affiliates, I welcome you to the website of the UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters. Our Publications page has our research reports and journal articles. The Tools and Resources page provides access to the other outputs of our creative faculty, students and colleagues. What We Do describes some current and completed projects. We will be continuously updating the website, so I recommend you check back regularly.
Our website is updated but our mission remains the same: to ensure healthy, resilient and safe communities facing the threat of disasters, terrorism, climate change, community violence, and public health emergencies. We bring a multi-disciplinary faculty and the scientific strengths and community centeredness of the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health to address these challenges. We also unite disciplines across the UCLA campus and stakeholders across Southern California around this mission.
UCLA’s location in the nation’s most diverse county makes the Center for Public Health and Disasters an important national and regional resource, concentrating on making economically and culturally diverse communities more resilient. We are particularly focused on the power of community participation, the resources of resilient communities, and the complexities of vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations.
We consider Los Angeles the city of the future and treat it as an urban resilience laboratory. The challenges of disasters and resilience found in Southern California are not unique to the region. In addressing the range of issues found here, we are providing solutions and models serving other urban regions in the U.S. and around the world.
After over 15 years of research, teaching and service, it was time to rebuild the webpages to proudly reflect our accomplishments, announce our new initiatives, and be a portal for communications. Please explore and contact me if you have any questions.
