Heat Waves

In one study, we are examining which socio-demographic groups were most likely to die during extreme heat events, and in which seasons deaths occur.  The results may surprise you.

In another study, funded by the National Science Foundation (in partnership with Arizona State University and the UCLA Institute of Environment and Sustainability), CPHD is studying strategies to reduce urban vulnerability to extreme heat events.

Using Los Angeles, California and Phoenix, Arizona as case studies, we are investigating how cities can reduce heat-related mortality and morbidity in their most vulnerable neighborhoods by increasing access to public cooling centers, access to air conditioning, the reliability of electricity provision, and the thermal characteristics of buildings.
